Thinking About Buying a Car?

Make sure you're getting the right coverage.

Since the invention of the automobile at the end of the 19th century, states across the country have created regulations for the public’s safety and protection. Auto insurance was created in response to a growing frequency of auto accidents that caused bodily injury, death, and property damage. In fact, Massachusetts was the first state to introduce ‘compulsory’ insurance, whereby a driver is now required to insure his or her auto liability before registering a vehicle. Most other states have similar laws, but vary depending on the territory. For instance, New Hampshire is the only state that does not require vehicle owners to have auto insurance, but instead has a financial responsibility requirement in which drivers must prove that they can pay damages if they are held responsible for an auto accident. Regulations aim to ensure that all drivers have sufficient insurance, but there are still several thousands of drivers living near you who are driving without coverage, or even a driver’s license. Uninsured and under-insured operators are prevalent and pose a high risk to your well being. It is important that you are aware of the risk that surrounds you every time you get in a vehicle, and prepare yourself and your passengers by maintaining a quality auto insurance policy.

There are different types of insurance coverage within each auto policy. Some of these may include:

  •   Bodily Injury to Others

This coverage pays damages to people who are injured or killed by your auto in an accident. Compulsory Bodily Injury coverage may be limited to accidents within your state, and coverage limits are typically neither optional nor sufficient in the event of an accident.

  •   Personal Injury Protection

This coverage will pay you, or others who are injured in an auto accident for medical expenses, lost wages, and replacement services. Replacement services include reasonable payments for necessary services that would have been performed for the benefit of the injured party’s household had he or she not been injured.

  •   Uninsured Motorist

This coverage pays for damages for bodily injury caused by an uninsured or hit-and-run auto. This coverage is meant to protect you or those occupying your vehicle if an accident occurs resulting from an at-fault driver who does not have insurance, or can not be identified in a motor vehicle accident.

  •   Damage to Someone Else’s Property

This coverage will pay you, or operators of your vehicle, if involved in an at-fault accident that causes damage to another’s vehicle or property.

(In MA, the above mentioned types coverage are considered compulsory, and minimum state required limits apply)

  •   Optional Bodily Injury

This coverage may enhance your compulsory bodily injury insurance, in terms of providing higher limits or coverage in extended territories.

  •   Medical Payments

This coverage will pay you and those people occupying your vehicle for reasonable and necessary medical and funeral expenses incurred as a result of an accident.

  •   Collision

This coverage will pay for any direct and accidental damage to your vehicle caused by a collision.

  •   Limited Collision

This coverage, while not as broad as Collision, will pay for any direct and accidental damage to your vehicle caused by a collision IF the operator of your vehicle was not more than 50% at fault in the accident, and the owner of the other vehicle can be identified.

  •   Comprehensive

This coverage will pay for any direct and accidental damage to your vehicle other than damage caused by a collision. Examples of covered losses include  vandalism, fire, theft, earthquake, windstorm, hail, water, flood, or contact with a bird or animal.

  •   Substitute Transportation

This coverage will reimburse you for transportation costs if you lose the use of your vehicle for at least 24 hours due to a covered collision or comprehensive loss. Transportation costs will be reimbursed while your vehicle is being repaired or replaced, and various daily reimbursement amounts are available depending on your desired coverage selection.

  •   Towing and Labor

This coverage will pay towing and labor costs incurred each time your vehicle is disabled, and will only pay for labor performed at the scene necessary to make your vehicle operational. Limits apply depending on your desired coverage selection.

  •   Underinsured Motorist

This coverage will pay damages for bodily injury to people injured from an accident caused by someone who does not have enough insurance to pay for the damages. This coverage is meant to protect you and anyone else occupying your vehicle in such an accident.
